The Eastern Cape Gambling Board (ECGB) kicked off Responsible Gambling Month on 31 October 2025 with the destruction of more than 500 illegal gambling machines that were confiscated from outlets across the province.
These machines were seized during joint operations by the ECGB Inspectorate and the South African Police Service (SAPS). The newly appointed Board Chairperson, Ms Vuyelwa Vika, said the destruction shows the strong partnership between the ECGB and law enforcement in fighting illegal gambling.
She explained that illegal gambling harms communities and results in millions of rand lost in potential tax revenue for the province. CEO Mr Mabutho Zwane added that most of these machines are found in outlets owned by people who often do not have proper documents to operate legally.
The ECGB will continue raising awareness on illegal and excessive gambling, especially during the festive season. The Board encourages communities to report illegal gambling activities and to always practise responsible gambling.
